Activities to help teachers with English as a Second Language (ESL) Students
It is important to be aware that ESL students might encounter difficulties with literacy comprehension (including grammar usage). The following activities are designed to develop students literacy skills and build self-confidence.
Word order activity: Students are asked to place cut up words including clauses (subjects and verbs), pronouns, subordinate clauses in various ways in order to create various meanings to sentences. (ACELA1481) (ACELA1491) (ACELA1493) (ACELA1507)
Irregular verbs: Using irregular verbs can become confusing due to no precise rule or pattern to follow. Past, present activities help students to understand how to incorporate irregular verbs. (ACELA1482) (ACELA1523)
Prepositions: Different languages use different prepositions to express the same idea. (ACELA1493) (ACELA1495)
Countable nouns.
Articles activity: The following activity promotes students awareness of the use of articles a, an, and the. Although, sometimes no article is necessary. Quick reference guide and articles activity.
Past, present and future tense: This activity helps students determine tenses, (time of an action or state of being) as shown by a verb. Time can be split into three periods the present (what you are doing), the past (what you did) and the future (what you are going to do, or hope / plan to do ).
Designing a timeline of your life's events can be a good place to start. Detailing what happened before you were born, when you were born and at certain ages of your life, focusing on past perfect tense.
Then get students to do the same with their life.
Students may want to use the internet to find out what happened in the years before they were born as well as significant events after they were.
(ACELA1482) (ACELA1523)
Perfect tenses: English verbs have three perfect verb tenses: present perfect tense, past perfect tense and future perfect tense.
