Irrespective of year level it is vital that educators have a sound understanding of grammatical functions, metalanguage and sequencing of instruction.
We must also consider that even though students may have covered grammatical functions in earlier years, they will still require ongoing revision in these areas to be able to consolidate their learning and consistently apply and build upon their skill set. |
Research shows that teaching and learning of grammar must incorporate the following approaches:
- A balance of skills-based and whole language methods.
- Taught in a planned and systematic way.
- Includes a balance of explicit, integrated, embedded and incidental learning experiences.
- Language operates at word, sentence and text level; and are interrelated.
- Discussed in relation to whole texts rather than in isolation.
- The learning of language needs to be taught in context and hold meaning to the students through the use of real-text.
- Language teaching and learning needs to be integrated across curriculum.
- Students need to be actively engaged within the learning process, and be given multiple opportunities to practice and consolidate their knowledge of grammar.
- New grammatical concepts need to be anchored on familiar subject matters.
